Just give the client an IP in the same subnet, and give it the IP of the domain controller as the DNS Server. Should be good to go, as long as you set up the virtual machines on the same virtual network.

    That's not working for you?

What virtualization package are you using?

How do you have the virtual NICs configured?

Can you ping one machine from the other? (check firewall settings as well)

I'm really not that familiar with Virtual PC. Can you set them to be on their own LAN segment or something like that?

Do you think I should use different virtual software?

I dont know what else to do to make the client join the domain

It's up to you. That's a personal preference on your part. Virtual PC 2007 is fine.

What are your other options for your NICs besides NAT?

I only have 1 option regarding Netwotking

this link shows what I am looking at

    http://www.techfornonprofits.com/blogger/uploaded_images/VirtualPC-721021.png

I am dropping down the list and choosing Shared Networking (NAT)

    the full list is

    Not connected
    Local only
    NVIDIA Nforce networking controller
    Shared Networking (NAT)

If this looks fine then I should be looking at how my server is set up

    Thanks for you help

You can't ping the server. How about the Client from the Server?

Maybe try switching to your physical NIC (which I assume is bridge mode) or local only. Just experiment a bit. All you need is different IPs in the same subnet to ping (which you do), so if you have your firewalls off or set to allow icmp echos, it really seems like the problem is your Virtual PC settings.

    Lee,

You want to be using something other than NAT really.

There should be a 'local only' network or something similar you can set your network cards to within the Virtual Machine Settings.

This will put the machines on a local 'virtual' network.

Using the IP's you have above all should be fine.

Let me know if you have any issues.

Using NAT will screw things up if you have a physical router your using, DHCP etc etc.

Your domain name with or without .com is based on whether netbios is enabled / blocked etc and what the netbios domain name was setup as.

Glad its all ok though. =)

If you still want internet you could always setup a second nic using NAT or Shared Networking.
