passive-interface

when we use RIPv1 or RIPv2 protocol, we normally set no out put update to fastEthernet LAN by using passive-interface f 0/0 (or) something like this. What I want to knw is, why we don't need to send update info to that interface. Why are the not required?
Please someone explain me about this. I read some articles already but still don't get it.
Thanks so much.

The ethernet port is probably connected to your local LAN with no other router on that segment. If there is no router on that segment to receive routes there is no need to broadcast routing information. This would help performance as well as security

That's what I wanted to know.

When you do a network statement for RIP it is classful so if you have interfaces that you do not want to be participating in RIP you use pass-interface. Also it only prevents it from sending not receiving. It works differently for EIGRP as it establishes neighbors and they will not form because no hellos are being sent. HTH
