Can I take either exam? Can I pass this exam with the Syngress book only? Which Syngress book is needed for the SY0-201 exam?

Ah, it looks like the new exam went live on October, 14th. I knew it was being updated this fall, but I didn't know it was actually available now.

Yea, you can take either one; you'll still end up with the Security+. The Syngress book is obviously only going to cover the old exam since the new one has only been out for a couple of weeks.

Have you been preparing for it, or are you just getting started now?

I haven't been able to find any books covering the new material just yet, so you'll probably be better off looking over the CompTIA site and find out when the older exam will be retired, and set your goal there. Otherwise, you'll have to study up on security topics in general, and wait for the SY0-201 books to be published.

I have not started yet. I am currently in school and want to be certified by this summer (read and study in between my classes).

I prefer to take the 2008 exam, so I anxiously await a book to be released covering the new material.

Can someone tell me if I can pass this exam with only one book?

Looks like Sybex has a book for CompTIA's new Security+ exam (SY0-201).

Is Syngress superior in this subject?

Cool. I think the consensus is that the Syngress book is more complete than the Sybex book, but that would certainly be sufficient to get you started. I am talking about the old Sybex book though; it looks like that one was just released yesterday.

You're fine with one book, so long as you have something like CBT Nuggets or TestOut to back it up. Otherwise, having a secondary book is recommended. It's never a good idea to study only a single book or study-resource before an exam, you might not cover everything.

Nope, that's just the updated book for the old exam, not for the new exam. the JK0-010 is just the educational version of the SY0 exam.

So, as I understand the Sybex is the only resource that has some learning material for the new Security+ exam version ?

I just picked up the new Sybex book today. It looks pretty good, but I would not trust it as the only study source. But by the time the other books are released, I'll have this one done and out of the way and probably about 50% preped for the test. The material does not look difficult, but I hear the test is

What else materials do you use ?

I think to use for my training the sybex book and the testout series for the Security+ sy0-101 exam.

    Hey,

Which one was released 'yesterday' in relation to your post date? Checking Borders.com, it didn't look like the Sybex one wasn't going to be released until 11/10.

Maybe it's just Borders and/or the the Deluxe edition...

Is very strange because I have found and downloaded the Sybex deluxe version and is seems to be the same like the official material for the sy0-201.. icon_eek.gif

I am not sure about that... this is the first Security+ book I've looked at. It was the only Security+ book at Barns and Nobel dated for 2009 so I picked it up. I plan to use one other study guide, probably Syngress, and of course technotes and google.

Has anyone taken the new 2008 exam yet? I'm going for it on Monday and was wondering if they cleaned up the questions so they're not as obscure/lacking information as they have been notorious for being in the past.

Definitely let us know how it goes. I'm not far off, but unfortunately not ready yet.

    Most definitely good sir.

As far as prepping goes I didn't find too many 2008 exam resources except the new Sybex book, which wasn't too bad, it's still the standard "inch deep mile wide" on the information front. Other than that just some old notes/books from the previous exam.

Took the 2008 exam on Monday and passed with 810. I found the new Security+ to be far less obscure and annoying than it's predecessor. They still have oddly worded questions and plenty of "whats the best answer" out of a number of completely credible answers. But other than that I think this test is a lot easier than the previous version.

I used the new Sybex book and some old notes from the previous exam to study for this one. It seemed to me like the Sybex book covered about 75-80% of the material present on the exam, not quite as in depth as the questions ask however. I'd recommend reading the Sybex book just to build a good foundation of knowledge and then flesh out the areas you don't know much about with online research or other materials. I find that most of the old security+ exam study material will still help you a great deal for this test.

Overall I'm glad Comptia reorganized the test the way they did, it's a lot easier.
