IOS image file extensions

Hello,
I have never seen this before and I hope one of you can help. I am working with an older router, a 7206VXR and the IOS image file ends with .E and not with .bin.
Can someone explain the significance of this? Thanks in advance.

By the way, there is nothing wrong. The router is functioning normally. Thanks.

The IOS image file in question is: c7200-Kboot-mz.121-8a.E
Thanks for any input you can provide.

It just means it is a 12.1E release. They left off the .bin.
