Took my test today

Hello member,

I took the 70-270 test today, I was pretty nervous
the first question bowled me over, and they kept coming,
some long some short. But even surprisingly the 1 sentence questions
were confusing sometimes, which worry me.

I had a lot of Dual Booting Questions which were phrased very confusing, with dynamic drives, and complicated configurations thrown into these dual booting questions. I do not believe I did well on them.

I was destroyed on the Permissions, which I knew I would be, even though simple in the text books, the diagrams, and lengthy confusing questions froze me up.

There were plenty of Security Template type questions, at least 8 or 9,
There were 5 or 6 Network protocols and services questions. there were several IIS questions and company Webpages, host headers, etc.

I didn't do well on the RIS questions, because they aren't straight forward, it takes administrative experience to sort out the question clearly, that's why I got blown away on these ., because most of them were related to Answer File configurations with complicated switches for answers.

There were a few questions on Exceptions, and trusted sites, plus Boot up problems, which had me scratching my head, having to do with ntldr and ntdetect as possible solutions, copying them back on. Setutmanager questions, and answers like DHCP relay agents which I picked and was probably wrong, very weak on network configuration type questions, and proxy, and of course some installer msiexec type questions phrased unclear and confusing.
I'm not going to mention anymore, just to say that I got a 677 and was extremely disappointed, I thought it would have been over after studying for 6 months but now I have to go through that torture again.

The test was 3.5 hours with 64 questions . But I'd like to thank everyone for there help here, I saw how the test was, and to tell you the truth, I'm worried that I may score less than this on the next test, not because I wasn't prepared but because personally I have a hard time with lengthy confusing questions, that are not really clear. Also I have absolutely no experience in a MCP setting or Administrating or Troubleshooting job setting, and have only used XP for home use. I studied with the MS Press BOOK, Sybex Book, Passport Book, all of the sample questions I can find on Cdrom, these board and on the internet.
I used all the time they gave me, and had nothing extra left but to review a few questions. Thankyou all again for your kind help, ric

Hopefully you will get it next time.

Try not to release to much info about the exam as to the questions and available answers as this violates the Microsoft Policy.

    Sorry to hear that.

Luckily, the Second Shot is available till June, I think, so plenty of time to review.

If you don't mind my asking, what is your motivation for taking this test?

I only ask because, having taken both the XP and Vista exam, I can tell you that the Vista one focuses pretty much entirely on the home user, and also gives its own MCTS certification. Depending on your reason for taking MS tests, if you are lacking administrative experience, it may be better suited.

270 is a rough exam. Get as much hands on as you can. Have you gotten in to virtualization yet? If not, now's a great time to start. Also, look into Transcender practice exams; they help a lot.

    thanks appreciate the advice,

You mentioned the Vista, and Virtualization,

I didn't know the Vista is now a Certification Exam,
it just came out recently, interesting.

And the fact that you said it was more Home Based
instead of Active Directory and Domain based
like the XP exam, would interest me alot.

Would it make sense to abandon the XP exam and start
studying Windows Vista now. I only recently used
Vista, it seems very sophisticated, more complicated.,
do the same basic principles apply, and would this
give me the title of MCP.

as far as the Virtualization, can you explain further, had would
this enable me to run a lab in my house as part of an active
directory domain, and enable me to deploy RIS installations for practice.
    Thankyou, Ric

Yes, you can run vmware server (free) and setup a few domain controllers and client machines. This will allow you to practice and go beyond your current studies.

I would keep with the XP exam as you have put in alot of work and are so close. However remember that if you do your mcsa and want to upgrade to the 2008 track then you will have to do the vista exam too.

The Xp Exam would give you the MCP Cert.

The Vista Exam give you the MCTS Cert.

I couldn't imagine abandoning 270 after all that work and coming so close (you probably only missed it by a couple questions).

Check out VirtualBox, VMware Server, VMware Workstation (not free like the others, but you can get a 30-day trial), or VirtualPC 2007. Also long as you have a decent CPU, a couple of gigs of RAM, and HD space for the VMs, you'll be set. That will help you out immensely. I wish I had discovered virtualization sooner.

Like I said, picking up Transcender will help you get used to the style of questions; they write them similarly to MS. After a bit of practice, you'll start to get a feel for the way MS asks their questions, and things will get easier. Hang in there.

    HI,

I wanted to ask that if you complete all the exams in Transcender,
what good would it do you might get DIFFERENT questions on
    the Microsoft Exam.

Every question involves different solutions, and offers also different Answers,
How would transcender or any other test engine, help me, even though
I would complete all the transcender exams or Measure up examsx, etc.

I've taken a lot of sample questions, hundreds, and hundreds, but then I took
the Microsoft Exam, and got a different question, or a smilar question with
a variety of different answers of solutions. So how would this help.

    Thanks, Ric

Test prep software is used to help you judge how prepared you are for the exam, not to give you the answers. If they gave you the answers it would not be exam prep but cheating. You can also use test prep software to help you understand where you are weakest in the technology you are studying. By studying the questions you get wrong and understanding why each answer is either right or wrong you will be one step closer to mastering the technology. Just completeing the exams is not enough, you must integrate them into your studies.

I'm not sure about the other packages, but Transcender gives really good explanations for each option was or wasn't correct. I occasionally come across something I hadn't seen anywhere else. It's just one piece of the puzzle.

I totally agree...get some transcender time in, once you are aceing the preset tests you'll pass no problem.

    Go gettem!

    Hi,

But each test contains their own unique questions and answers,

The tests I'm sure on Transcender, rather the questions, may
be quite different than on the actual Exam.

How would I benefit from Aceing a transcender or other
type of test if the questions are all unique, and even
the answers are different, from the actual 270 exam.

    thanks

I think you'll find the transcender questions are very similar.

They give detailed explanations as to the answers if you get them wrong or you choose to review your answers. These gave me a much better understanding of the kind of things I need to know for the real 70-270 test.

Might not suit everyone, but it certainly helped me alot. That and the CBT Nuggets, and TestOut.

Once I started getting above 90% I booked in and passed.

    Best of luck mate...
