what is the difference between the Group Policly Editor (gpedit.msc) and the System Policy Editor (poledit.exe)?

    Looking at their names should give you the answer.

    Simply put, Group Policy Editor (gpedit.msc) allow you to edit a Group Policy object in Active Directory wheras the System Policy Editor (poledit.exe) allows you to edit the Local System policy.

    Thats what I thought, but I've been using gpedit.msc to configure all of my local settings like auditing, security options, etc. This is why I'm confused. It actually seems like it has more functionality too.

    Group Policy Editor (gpedit.msc) - Windows 200x / AD

    System Policy Editor (poledit.exe) - Windows NT / 9x

    You can use poledit in on a Windows 200x pc in an NT 4.0 server environment, but once you have AD and can use Group Policies, I think you will use it.
