Got an offer for 2 of them... this enough for BCMSN...

OK here I go.

For both they are £700 but i'm trying to barter down.

£300-350 I guess is about the going rate for these things?

BTW, they are 48 port SMI's with the EMI's allegedly added to them (12.2)

They're both not PoE.

Can you tell me - do they *need* to be PoE just for the sake of VoIP?

If they aren't PoE - does it make a lot of difference otherwise?

For the CCNP I am sure that PoE won't make a difference, however, yes, I know I will need one for CCVP for VoIP phones (Meh, I can always buy another 3550 afterwards if I need it)

See, the thing is.

I know I probably am spending more than I *need* to but I want the lab that I build to be the very best for all things Cisco that I try and do - and I am willing to pay for it

I wouldn't worry about POE for the CCNP, don't think there is any configuration required for the NP.

If you have an IP phone and a non-poe enabled switch you can just buy an external power supply for the IP phone/s, I mean it's not like you need a call centre's worth of IP handsets for the CCNP or even CCVP.

Exactly.

I also know that there are a stack of pair power supplies for the phones at work, and we use PoE throughout

Like others have said, the PoE is nice to have but not necessary. I always like having at least one in a lab, as you have less clutter with wires.
