in CCNA & CCENT
I see now that this is off by default on a 2940 and 2950. Is this turned on by default in later Catalyst series?

My mistake. I can't find this option on the 2950. The 2940 does support auto-mdix.
Is the command just located in a different location on the 2950?
Here are the IOSs that I am running
2940 - c2940-i6k2l2q4-mz.121-22.EA12.bin
2950 - c2950-i6q4l2-mz.121-22.EA1.bin -

I guess I was mistaken thinking the 2940 was just an 8 port version of the 2950.
