I'm curious, does Cisco put any preventative measures onto the vty lines? The idea of sending my passwords in clear text via telnet just gives me shudders.

You must use secure shell to accomplish this. You will have to flash an IOS on your router that has IPSEC support to use secure shell, however.

You can always SSH to the router or connect through some type of VPN.
