PPPoE Question

Starting my ISCW study and am just going over the PPPoE sections.

Something is a bit confusing at the moment, you can have PPPoE over Ethernet interfaces and PPPoE over ATM interfaces.

I'm just a bit confused as to where the ethernet intefaces come into play, i thought most xDSL products ran over phone lines. So where does the provider facing ethernet interface come into play?

Also is the interface the an actual phone line connects to the ATM interface?
