A question about FreeNas
I am debating about putting in FreeNas versus windows 2003. The deal breaker for me would be if freenas can handle gigabit speeds effectively. I have seen some reports that either the os or the samba component (be nice, i know nothing at all about linux) slows things down pretty substantially. Any thoughts?

Can't you just test it out and do some benchmarking yourself? Both OSes are going to have some overhead. -

I had found many reviews for FreeNAS where people were very successful, but in my situation FreeNAS didn't work well for me in a NAS server at the office, that one ended up using Open Filer as it worked well right out of the box, later I found that in a similar platform, with a different network card that FreeNAS worked well (didn't perform well on an Intel PRO/1000 PT). So the point is that your success can vary depending on components used as well as other variables. I can see that I've had both FreeNAS and Open Filer setup on gigabit networks and have been very happy with the performance from both once you find a platform that works well.
