stuck setting up my contoso domain

Hi -

Im using virtual machine to set up my NW. I have my first pc setup with server 2003 acting as a domain controller and DHCP server. Im trying to get my second pc (server 2003 aswell) to join my domain - but it is not recognising the domain name (defined as contoso.com in my domain controller), when i try to change it from a workgroup to a domain. Is there anything glaringly obvious that ive missed?

First thing to check is the firewall on the DC. Your second PC is trying to contact the DC and cannot find it. Also try pinging the DC from the second PC.

I had configure the firewall on the DC to allow my other server through - it now has an ISP address automatically assigned, so i guess thats good. When i try to get the second pc to join the domain - i can put in the login and password, but afterwords it is saying the specified server cannot perform the specified operation. I pinged the DC and it's coming back as all ok, so im wondering if it is another setting i have to change on the DC, to allow my second comp to join it's domain.

How do you have your DNS setup? You need to have your client pointing to the DC.

Does your DC have a static ip?

I had this same problem, and I had to temporarily turn off the firewall on my DC in order to get the other server to join up. There's got to be a better & more secure way to do it, but it worked in the short term...

Nope - i entered a range when i was setting it up:

    from 10.0.0.100
    to 10.0.0.200

because, it wanted me to identify a scope range when setting the DC up. It seems to have allocated an IP address to the client - so it must be set up on the client as obtain dns address automatically.

Thanks mate - that has done the trick, it's now joined the domain!

For setting up your first domain, I highly recommend you do not use your ISPs or your home router's DHCP.

Set a static address of 192.168.1.1/24 for your domain controller and 192.168.1.11/24 for your XP host. As far as your physical layer, use a cheap hub or switch to plug into?
