I just purchased what I thought was a C3550 on ebay. Yet on the unit is says 3500XL. Also it says I have 2 Gigabit ports when I do a show ip int brief but I don't see them. Is this normal? Here is the show version:

mikej412 Member Posts: 10,086 ■■■■■■■■■■The 3500-XL switches are old Layer 2 switches. Because of the command set differences we don't usually suggest it for a CCNA Lab.... but it could be used as a 3rd switch....
The 3550 is a Layer 3 switch.
They are definitely not the same.
If someone sold a 3500-XL as a 3550 switch then you should file a dispute with eBay/paypal.
If someone says it's a 3500-XL but also put 3550 in the title to attract buyers who don't pay attention, you may be out of luck.:mike: Cisco Certifications -- Collect the Entire Set! -
tiersten Member Posts: 4,505No. A 3500XL isn't the same as a 3550. The XL switches are the previous generation from the 2950 and 3550 which have already been superseded anyway.

CISCO WS-C3550-48-SMI Catalyst 3550 48-Port Switch - eBay (item 330306185574 end time Feb-12-09 18:41:13 PST) -
tiersten Member Posts: 4,505Yes. The title and description both say 3550 and don't mention 3500XL at all. The only place that says 3500XL is the picture. Have they actually shipped the switch to you? They might have used the wrong photo?

Yes I have the switch right here with me. That show version from the OP I just obtained after turning it on. I'm confused though, if you search for 3550 switch on ebay most of them look exactly like this one. -
mikej412 Member Posts: 10,086 ■■■■■■■■■■Since they have a phone number -- call them and complain. The auction was for a 3550 -- but the picture is a 3500 XL (but you have to zoom the large photo to see it.
Best case they shipped you the wrong switch and will replace it (or give you your money back)
Worst case they they are ripping people off by selling 3500-XL switches as 3550 switches. That's definitely a 3550 price.:mike: Cisco Certifications -- Collect the Entire Set! -
mikej412 Member Posts: 10,086 ■■■■■■■■■■They look alike -- except my 3550-48 says Catalyst 3550 Series above the GBIC slots where yours says Catalyst 3500 Series XL
They probably have a CCNA (who only used a simulator) in the back sorting & listing the items on eBay.
Their other auctions I looked at seem fine... except for their current 3550 auction that still has a 3500-XL picture.:mike: Cisco Certifications -- Collect the Entire Set! -

I will be contacting them shortly. Also, those Gigabit slots, if there are not ports in them how come it shows as having 2 gigabit interfaces in the CLI? -

miller811 Member Posts: 897That is normal. The controller is inside and always present.
For the $275 purchase price, they either shipped you the wrong switch, or screwed you bad.I don't claim to be an expert, but I sure would like to become one someday.

Netwurk Member Posts: 1,155 ■■■■■□□□□□If they are overnighting you a good one, they are probably legit
The good sellers value their 100% rating (even a guy like that with only 51 sales) so I'm guessing it was an honest mistake
Good luck with the 3550

Yea they are a legit company. They have an actual phone number for their business and multiple offices so I'm sure it was a mistake. In either case, I'm just glad I came on here and asked. Thanks again everyone.
