Subnetting Vs VLAN

CiscoNewbCiscoNewb Member Posts: 15 ■□□□□□□□□□
Hi,

Just started on CCNA and got to the chapter on subnetting. I'm sure this will be answered as I read on through the books but what is the difference between subnetting and vlan's and when is it best to use each?

Thanks.

They're not the same thing. Reread the descriptions about what subnetting is and what VLANs are.

VLANs are at layer 2. Subnetting is at layer 3.

While it makes sense to have each VLAN be a single subnet -- there is no networking rule or law that requires it.

Is a Router required for devices on seperate VLAN's to communicate?

A layer 3 device is required for VLANs to communicate. A router is a layer 3 device, but there are also layer 3 switches (which can preform some of the same functions as a router), so it all comes down to semantics.

Subnetting deals with breaking up ip addresses to save addresses.

VLAN or Virtual LANS deals with breaking up broadcast domains.

They are not the same thing.

if you need me to be more specific you can send me a message.

Yes two devices in seperate VLANS require a router to communicate.

To add to your confusion. A VLAN = a broadcast domain = a subnet! Though not at the same layers............

Or a layer 3 switch. For further reading google "Router on a Stick" and this will show configuration examples for configuring it.
