SNMP,its not enabled by default so you would have to have it preconfigured on all devices.
Networking, sometimes i love it, mostly i hate it.Its all about the $$$$

Thanks but i meant what would you have to do if CDP is disabled to find out remote switches ip address and what interface its connected to, etc?

thats what i thought. so HYPOTHETICALLY if someone was asked to get the ip address and remote device interface it was connected to, the only way to do that is with CDP; correct?

What if the CDP command wasn't running or available?

Well don't quote that on me 100%.

I haven't started studying for CCNP yet, and `am not up to speed with all the little applications and sniffers that may exist for such.

I know for routers on a local lan you could just use the Default Gateway. But then you still wouldn't know what type of router and what it was running. No way of find out what Switch is there unless you looked at STP, DTP broadcast on sniffers. And you won't see those broadcast anyway if the Switch has set up your Local Host's port as an Access Port and not a trunk; turned off autonegotition and such.

Someone who knows more than me may step in and tell us both different though. And I would like to know if something to the contrary does exist.
