70-291 DNS Help Needed

rflynnrflynn Member Posts: 12 ■□□□□□□□□□
Help would be greatly appreciated!!!!!!!!!!!!
I have failed twice now!

I score above 70 percent on all areas but DNS!!!
The second time I managed to score 100% in RRAS...
DNS I cannot get over 30% !@!#!#

For some reason I am having trouble determining when to use the proper types of zones, primary or secondary, forwarders, etc...

Does anyone know of study material that thoroughly explains when to use what?

I have read the Sybex book, setup small labs, but still not sinking in...

Thanks!

R Flynn

Have you had a look at the Resources post for 291 in this forum? There's some good links there in varying degrees of depth and complexity.

    http://www.techexams.net/forums/70-291-windows-2003-network-infrastructure/19507-70-291-resources.html

One thing that might help is to sit down and write down what each of the major aspects of DNS are and a description of each of them in your own words. Each time you find you can't describe one of them go and look up the details you're missing. You could possibly post it here once you've finished with it, I'm sure some of the TE regulars can give it a once over and see if you've missed anything from there.

Well, I don't what exact problems you're having with different zones, but this link helped me a lot with determining when to use stub zones vs. conditional forwarders. This might solve some of the problem icon_thumright.gif

    Thanks!

    Those are excellent links.
I am scheduled for Tuesday am, I think this may push me over the top...

I like how it explains "such as a company merger" or "different networks"

    VERY helpful

Now if only my test center will allow me to get thru the exam without any crashes or reboots!@!!##

Good luck with slaying the beast on Tuesday!! After looking at a lot of posts on here at Techexams, I don't think that RRAS counts for a lot on the test. I scored the best on RRAS on the exam, which was about 80% or 85%, and I got a 700. There are several people on here that have received 0% for RRAS on the exam and still passed. I believe that you should still study hard for RRAS though, because every little bit counts, especially for me, I just barely passed icon_lol.gif.

    Congrats!!!!!!

I know what you mean on the RRAS.
This weekend is all about DNS!

I am taking the advice, writing out everything, & creating my own sheets to review Tuesday morning.

I have unofficially taken almost half of the exam 5 times.
My test site, which is right by my work, received a "bad" test they say.

The frustration from the crashes has really gotten to me.
I cannot afford more time off of work. When I took the 290 I was able to take it at 4pm, now they wont schedule it for later than noon?!?!?

This site has great info on it, & I would like to thank everyone who posted!

    Off to study,

    Congrats again!

Just what to give a thanks to:
    Big Jizay & elaverick1981!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! & This site!!!!!

    I sat for 291 this morning & low & behold I passed with a 826!!!!!!!
This far exceeded my expectations, with all the fun I have had with this test.

After listening to the advice of Big Jizay & elaverick1981 I put together an excel file with most of the info on DNS.

    Boy did that help!!!

Would it be redundant to post a PDF of that file here for everyone???

Hope this isnt pushing the NDA, I had an entirely new test again... with the majority of it covering DNS, RRAS, & WSUS.

    Thanks again!!!!!!!!!! icon_lol.gif

    On to 293

I'm pretty sure it's no secret that the exam contains DNS, RRAS, and WSUS ;)

    Congratulations on the pass!

    Hey Congratulations!!! icon_cheers.gif

You slayed the Beast pretty good there! I'm glad that you have a better understanding of DNS now. I don't think it'd be redundant to post the notes here. Even if another post has the same info as yours, your document might be easier to understand for some people than the others. Even if you don't post it, can you send a copy to me? My brother is studying for the 291 now.

Once again, congratulations and I'll see you in the 293 forums!! icon_study.gif

    Big Jizay

I will post it in a day or so.
    Are you taking a break?

I am going to try 293 in about 4 weeks.

I plan to start studying for the 293 either today or tomorrow. I just wanted to have a week long break. The 291 really took it out of me icon_pale.gif. Thanks in advance for the notes!

I thought I sent them from home so I could post them today, but it looks like they didn't make it...

I will make sure to get them posted tonight...

From what I can tell, 293 should be about 85% of what 291 was...

I am scheduling it in 3 weeks... in hopes that I can use my 291 experience!

BTW thank you once again, you get stuck in a rut & getting a new idea can help out a lot. Which it definitely did in my case.

    This forum is great!

    :)

Thanks again rflynn. Now that you've passed the 291, be sure to change your Certification section on TechExams from "(Working on 70-291)" to "MCSA" icon_wink.gif

    Big Jizay

    OK, here are the files...

I have to post an excel file, not sure about the rules on that.
Darn file is refusing to convert to PDF properly.

As simple as these are, they really helped me, so I hope they can help others.

    Well that didn't work...

Well I'm not sure how I can get the files on the forum,
(Maybe the Admin can direct me here)

otherwise I could email them to you Big Jizay?
