I've seen a couple...

I did. Got a 660 with only 7 hours of studying the TechNotes and 2 Transcender tests. Looked at Vista like 10 times only. Not a bad score/study ratio in my books.
Nothing bad with failing an exam too, really.

Yes there's no problem with failing. I actually accepted my first fail ever almost a month ago (70-294). But I choked out the mini beast today!

Nice work there. So onto the 298 or something? You have gone through these tests at a fairly rapid pace, I'd say. Only out of curiosity, how much longer you got to stay there at Baghdad?
