Daniel, debug ip rip will debug only the RIP protocol (so you are only debugging whats being learnt/forwarded etc..)
debug ip routing is as Hypnotoad explained above.
as i said before, Todd Lammle's books are so good when it come to things like that, in fact he's got few example on debugging rip with outputs and everything.
