Jumbo Frame vs Old Switch

What happens if a switch only supports an MTU of 1500 bytes and a device sends a jumbo frame across the wire? Is some data sent, and the rest recovered via TCP re-transmission, or is the entire frame dropped?

If you try to pass a jumbo frame through something which doesn't support jumbo frames then it will just drop that frame. The two endpoints will need to do PMTU discovery to work out what the maximum is.

Thanks for the reply! Interesting. I'll have to grab another wireshark capture tomorrow. It almost looked like something was getting through as I did notice some ACK responses from the recipient's IP. hmmmm.
