    Looks good but Openfiler will provide iSCSI functionality (and thus support all the 'cool' ESX features) on pretty much any previous generation of PC hardware you have in your spares cupboard. Pop in a couple of high capacity SATA HD's and you're ready to roll!

    Yea, I think the guy who wrote that was a bit too excited. You've been able to buy similar hardware at Newegg for awhile. It's always good to have more options though.

    Very true. It's also good to see that VMware have acknowledged that not all of their customers have huge datacentres and a blank cheque for backend storage.

    Yeah, though iomega's parent company (EMC) also owns VMware, so that may be the reason they were able to get the certification.

    Exactly EMC and VMware wanted a shared storage option that was super cheap for SMBs that was fully supported by VMware for use with VI3 (ESX).

    The other solutions suggested (OpenFiler, other NAS boxes) while they often work fine would leave you without any support from VMware since they aren't on the HCL.
