Can anyone shed some light on the inter-switch VLAN communication concept I'm a little unsure on that concept....icon_study.gif

are you referring to communicating between vlans on different switches?

If so is there something specific you are having problems with.

Are you referring to inter-vlan routing (trunks, subinterfaces, etc), or are you referring to VTP or just Ethernet in general?

What is the purpose of this mechanism...and encapsulation, ISL, 802.1Q.

    Thanks....icon_study.gif

a trunk allows multiple vlans to traverse a link

in order to distinguish which vlan each packet belongs to an encapsulation is needed. otherwise the device receiving packets would have no way of sorting which packet belongs to which vlan and they would all look the same

They allow electrical signals to be passed between computational systems that have certain differences between them.
