Hi guys,
I'm new here and am interested in getting certified. Currently have no certs, but do have some (above average) computer knowledge which includes, networking, windows oses. The only problem is I have no idea where to start, what I should be studying, etc. Could you guys point me in the right direction to where I should begin? Thanks.

Well, I want to be a Tech.
Go to client's businesses, help them with networking issues, computer issues.
I'm guessing they would call this a field technician? -

Ah, great. Thanks.
Is it possible to jump straight into MCSE?
Also, how likely would me having certificates land me a job in the IT industry?
I only have an AA degree in Business Administration. -

mcse is a number of tests you have to take. http://www.microsoft.com/learning/mcp/mcse/windows2003/default.mspx and thats if you just want the general mcse, and not messaging or security.Link Me

Paperclip Member Posts: 59 ■■□□□□□□□□It's certainly possible to start with MCSE. But it seems likely you would need to start at a desktop level of field tech. A+ might be more helpful to gain entry there.
Once you are working, you will possibly have some opportunity to hang around and assist the server/network field techs, while studying that material.
(In addition to A+ ?) The MSDST might make a nice bridge, since it would be even more of a feather in your cap toward desktop support, while also clearing a requirement or two toward MCSE. -

It is possible to jump into the MCSE, but to me it sounds like you don't know exactly what you want to do in IT yet. Once you get a foot in the door somewhere you can get a better idea of all the aspects of IT. Then you can choose a certification path that fits that rather than just getting an MCSE because it seems like a good certification to get.
Certification will help you get a job in this field, but the higher level certs (like MCSE) are a lot more helpful when coupled with relevant experience. I think your degree and an A+ will definitely be enough to get your foot in the door somewhere. Just don't forget about soft skills as they are equally important when looking for a job, especially for any customer/user facing position like a field tech or helpdesk job.
Good luck!An expert is a man who has made all the mistakes which can be made.
