I am trying to upgrade the IOS on my 2501 it says it has 8 MB of flash and dram.

ROM: System Bootstrap, Version 5.2(5), RELEASE SOFTWARE
BOOTFLASH: 3000 Bootstrap Software (IGS-RXBOOT), Version 10.2(5), RELEASE SOFTWA
RE (fc1)

Router uptime is 23 hours, 42 minutes
System returned to ROM by power-on
System image file is "flash:c2500-p-l.120-8.S"

cisco 2500 (68030) processor (revision A) with 8192K/2048K bytes of memory.
Processor board ID 01524423, with hardware revision 00000000

I am upgrading it with c2500-i-l.121-24 which is under 8 MB. However when I try to grab it from the tftp I get a:

%Error opening tftp://192.168.1.9/c2500-i-l.121-24 (Not enough space)

anyone have any idea?

You may have to remove the old image before bringing the new one in; I think your problem is that you don't have enough room for BOTH...

Anyway, before you do that test your TFTP setup with a small file; you may end up xmodem-ing if you remove your old image and after that discover that you can't TFTP...

I thought when you upload a new image, the IOS will erase itself first. What is xmodem-ing ?

I think it only erases the old one when using xmodem (not sure on that)

Xmodem is a way (slow way) to transfer files to your switch/router in the event that your IOS gets wiped out from it.

Not sure how to do it on a router, but the way I do it on my switch:

do a CTRL break to enter rommon
delete flash:old_image (may not be necessary on router)
    copy xmodem: flash:c2900XL-h-mz-112.8-SA1.bin

Now go to hyperterminal and select SEND FILE
Send the image when the router prompts you to
    Takes a good 30minutes
    then do a boot flash:new_image_name
    then set boot flash:new_image_name

Not sure if that works on routers. Worked on my switch though

It doesn't; you have to do it yourself.

That might depend on your router. Having never tried to load an image on a 2500 series router, I can't tell you if that statement is correct.

I do know that on 2600 series routers, 3600 series routers, and 7200 series routers, it will ask you if you want to erase the existing image first when you tftp another image into flash.

its not going to ask if you want to erase old flash, you will have to do it .
