Did yany one ever see this site when it had US History Major listed? Not sure if it had gotten hacked or what, but it was pretty funny. It was like that for a while actually.

I'm pretty shocked at how many there are of certain certs...the Vista numbers really surprised me. Guess a lot of folks heard it was easy & went for it. *shrug*

And I knew there were a lot of MCSAs & MCSEs, but MAN, a quarter million MCSAs?? That right there is enough inspiration to do an extra couple exams to get a specialization. I think I foresee a MCSA:S in my near future...

I have MCSE:S planned for later this year (only need 298 & 299 as I've already done Sec+), looks like I need a new plan to stand out from the crowd

MCITP: U.S. History was listed as having two people certified in it. I always thought that gag was hilarious.

An MCSA/MCSE may get you the interview but we all know it certainly won't get you a job on its own.

I'd rather 20 years and no certs than 20 certs and no experience personally.

I wouldnt. We have a guy that works here that has 30 years "experience" but says Certs are worthless.

Needless to say he is worthless and has lied about any and all of his "knowledge" and recently got demoted because of it.

Certs, atleast in most cases, verify some understanding of the topic.

Unless the person is a dumper. In the end its always a case by case basis.

I agree, certification sets a base line. Those with should have understanding to a level, which means similar professionals can communication and complete the job more efficiently.

I've met people that have "been in the industry for years" and declare openly that certification is pointless because anyone can brain **** them. In almost all cases that person is not up to scratch. Then again I've met my fair share of dumpers .... HHHHHMMMM (nothing nice to say here).

That's a matter of opinion I suppose. If i'm looking for someone senior what they've already done is far more important to me than what a piece of paper says they could potentially do.

Them not having certifications would speak more to there motivation to me than there knowledge.

experience is always a good thing...but more and more I find myself coming up against a position that requires a certain certification.

Just today I was applying for a position and when I completed the information section of the online application and hit apply it came to a landing page that made sure that I know that a certain number of years experience and a certain certification were required to be considered for the position.

So while the idea of experience trumps all is good...it is also becoming and old school way of thinking...while it is becoming increasingly easier to filter the applications based on what the candiate doesn't have over what they do have.

I'd have to say that's good for a worker, but not always good as an applicant.. I've got 14 years experience, and rarely if ever have been contacted for an interview on jobs I'm perfectly qualified for, jobs almost exactly the same as what I'm doing now (only with more room to move up), and I believe that it's because I didn't finish my comp sys diploma 15 years ago

I also agree that it has to be a case by case basis. I'm certified in many things however there are 1 or 2 things that I've only implemented in a lab environment. Doesn't meant that I wouldn't be able to figure it out in the real world...but it might take me longer then someone with more experience. I guess it all depends on the employer and how much they are willing to give you a chance.

I take the approach that both a advantage in todays marketplace, i may be wrong, but i form career around working for the experience and while learning preforming certs to both fill in gaps of knowledge that we currently haven't implemented or i may not come across in our enviroment as well as showing that i have a good understanding of different technologies and roles of my job duties.

my company is local goverment, there is no perks for me taking a single test or certification that will gain me anything in my job, however survial in IT over the last 12 years has taught me about bussiness concepts and i see to many of my co workers become comfortable in there job and loose willingness to be proactive with there career.

Adding a certifacation or 10+ certs, only benefits you... doesn't give you bragging rights really..... just shows you are willing to do your job as well as put in the extra time to better yourself and your knowledge and grow as a individual..... most interviews i have been in that growth shown by taking diverse certifactions seems to distiguish the indiviual more than the material of the cert itself....

my 2cents only take it however you would like

i currently am a IT specialist - Server Admin, with a few certs completed and hopefully more to come
