Help with CCNA lab

Hey everyone was wondering give me some advice. I was given three 2501 routers with one of them max dram and flash and the other two i believe the default dram and flash on them. I was given the cables for lab to connect these routers. The one 2501 has 12.3 IOS on it and the others have 11.x something. I also have a 2620xm that was given to me with 128 Dram / 64 Flash I believe with 12.3 and just the basic default connections on it which is the RJ45 Fast Ethernet and console port. I was wondering what would I need to connect this to other 2501 Router for CCNA lab. I believe it is a Serial port if I am not mistaken right? I will provide pictures and screen shots later what I have so can help me.

When you get a switch (Cisco 2950) you'll need transceivers for the 2500 routers (unless the other 2 2500s are the models with the built in hubs). You'd still need the transceivers to use cross-over cables between the router Ethernet ports if you don't want to get a switch right now.

You might also consider getting an NM-4A/S for the 2600XM. That also lets you use the common DB60 to DB60 back to back cables -- and gives you a router you can configure as a frame relay switch. You then use your 3 2500s as a hub and 2 spokes.

For the 2600XM you could consider WIC-1T cards. If the price is right you can consider the WIC-2T, but the smart-serial to DB-60 back to back cables are also usually more expensive. If you get the WIC-1T cards, then you just need to buy enough DB60 to DB60 back to back serial cables to connect all your routers together.

I've seen the NM-4A/S modules sell on eBay for a little more than a WIC-1T and less than a WIC-2T.

You might also want to start pricing the memory upgrades for the other 2 2500s. If you post a show version we can probably tell you if you'd need to upgrade the ROM Bios to support the cheap 3rd party memory upgrades.

Cables:
I have six V.35 DTE cables and one male to male connector connecting the two wires.
I have another cable that has a female end that plugs into the male connector of the serial wire with the large pins coming out of it and on the other side has male connector with 11 pins on top and 10 pins on top. I am not sure what that is for. Then I have six cisco wires that have label on them E34856 UL Type CL2 28 AWG 75C Shielded which I have no clue what they are for.

Thanks for all the help. I am not too worried about upgrading as I have some money to spend about 200.00 for upgrades. All this equipment was given to me by my boss for free

I know I have to upgrade the flash and mem on two of the 2501 so where is a good place and cheap to get that stuff?

I had a few old 4.x ROMs I had to upgrade to get support for 16/16 on the 2500s. I have a few 5.x ROMs that supported the 16/16 upgrades just fine. Your ROMs at 11.x are fine for supporting 16/16.

Argh!!! My favorite eBay memory upgrade vendor has nothing listed..... I hope they didn't go out of business.

There are still a few sellers on eBay that have the 8mb Flash and 16Mb DRAM for the 2500 routers -- but you'd have to shop to find the best combination of price and combined shipping charges. There are a couple vendors that seem reasonable, but I've never used them.

I am going to take the 8 mb flash out of one of the two 2501 routers so all I have to do is upgrade the dram.. what version of ios can i get with 16 mb flash and 8 meg of dram>

Does it actually have an 8MB SIMM in there? Run "show flash: chips" to see what is in there currently.

If you're adding or changing one of the existing flash memory SIMMs inside the 2500, you'll need to make sure it is partitioned correctly and it will need to be reformatted.

Use the Cisco Feature Navigator to work out what version you can run.

Wait. What exactly are you trying to do here?

This is what is currently in there:

1st 2500 - 16MB flash + 8MB RAM
2nd 2500 - 8MB flash + 4MB RAM
3rd 2500 - 16MB flash + 16MB RAM

I am removing the 2nd 2500 - 8MB flash + 4MB RAM router out of the bunch. I realized that it had 16 mb flash in there.. SO I am going to order 16m DRAM on the other router and then the NM-4A/S for the 2600XM.
