Congrats, so when are u gonna start?

I don't know, I have my phone interview this afternoon. I am still in school so I have to wait until the 2nd week of May so I can transfer these credits. I don't really want to start until July so I can have about a month break, and during that time freshen up and take my CCNA.

So you're looking at July. That's cool. If you pass your CCNA before then that'll be one less class for you to take. Most of your earlier classes here will be pretty easy, CIW foundations is pretty basic. I describe that class as a mile wide and an inch thick. If you did any html at all in school you can just do a little review and take the test.
No longer work in IT. Play around with stuff sometimes still and fix stuff for friends and relatives.

    Hello,

I'm looking at taking the WGU admissions exam and was wondering if anyone had any advice. Is the exam for everyone; or does it differ depending n the program you are going there for ? I'm planning on doing the MBA in IT Management if that helps any. Can anyone share the type of questions asked? not the exact questions - I'm not looking to ****. And lastly if anyone has any general advice comments or anything o the MBA IT program or the school in general (for example, like how well degrees from here are being received by employers.)

Thanks and all the best to everyone!

I think it is the same exam for everyone, but I don't know about graduate classes. Basic HighSchool/College memory **** for the test.

There is a HUGE thread stickied in this forum for more questions like this, also it is free to talk to a counselor about the questions you asked.

I plan to take the WGU entrance exam soon but am hesitant on the math part. I did some sample quizzes online and math gets pretty in depth. Anyone have any suggestions?

I finished the Math in about 45 minutes, and the essay in about 1.5 hours. I was at home, and had alot going on there at the time. Pick a quiet place, and you should be fine.

If you can't do it in less than 45mins or so, you probably should forget about a BS.

This isn't true. A blatantly flippant blanket statement like this may deter an otherwise capable individual from pursuing a degree.

Like others say, find a quiet place. I took breaks in between sections.
For Math, one thing you may also want to do is brush up (on math up to high school algebra with graphing) at a place like Math is Fun - Homework Help or Practical Algebra Lessons .

I think I did mine in around 2 hours. It's not hard, but you do need to have some quiet time for it.

How extensive is the algebra....quadratic formula, polynomial equations (factoring), graphs (mirrors, translations)?

Do they give you a topic to write about for the essay, for example, "Why do you believe WGU would be a benefit for you to attend?"
  • spiderjerichospiderjericho Registered Users, Member Posts: 896 ■■■■■□□□□□
They give you a topic to write about. I think I wrote about something in life I overcame.

I don't really recall the math except its mainly algebra and geometry. If you haven't done math in awhile, it might hurt. I haven't done math since 1998, so I had to send electric impulses to try to stimulate forgotten ways to complete problems.

I was worried about the exam, but it really isn't difficult if you've done college level math/English or did well on the ASVAB or SAT/ACT.

Hi, I just took my entrance exam last week (and passed! :D). If I recall, there was only 3-4 algebra questions and they weren't very advanced at all. As a matter of fact, I would safely say everything on the exam is of basic high-school level. The writing exam is a basic essay style and like spiderjericho, mine was on "overcoming" something in life. I was stressing out about how difficult it might be but was semi relieved that it wasn't hard, but instead just a refresher test. I was even surprised at how much stuff I still remember after all these years.

I'm super nervous about starting my IT program since I have no formal IT training or work experience. I have tinkered on computers for myself and friends/family for about 10 years now but it's not quite the same I'm assuming. I do have a group of IT professional friends I can ping for support and one pointed me to this forum as a matter of fact. Reading posts here makes me pretty excited to get this thing going once I earn my first Cert required to enroll :)

My advice if you have NO IT experience, is to review for the CIW 1D0-510 exam and try to pass that. The Cert is $150 (at least around the time I took it.) There's basically two reasons why someone like you would take the CIW 1D0-510:

    1) It is a WGU requirement.

    2) If you can't pass the CIW 1D0-510, then [the] IT [program @ WGU] might not be for you. A+ and Network+ are much harder exams compared to the CIW. But much of the concepts from this exam will help you pass them (and they're also requirements for WGU.)

The exams covers very basic concepts that are expected of an IT professional. That cert will not in anyway land you a job, BUT the concepts that an IT professional should know are covered. The only thing that might be a bit extraneous is the HTML portion, however, it's not that much of a deal breaker. I was able to pass that exam with a head cold and very little study.

For more information, go to these links:

    http://www.ciwcertified.com/certifications/web_foundations_series/associate.php

1D0-510: CIW Web Foundations Associate -uCertify (someone who has IT experience would not need uCertify...but this would help you out.)

CIW Foundations Study Notes (what IT professionals, including myself, used to pass the 1D0-510, but you might benefit from the somewhat more indepth study of uCertify)

HTML Tutorial (for the HTML portion of the exam.)

With proper study using those resources, you'll probably get the 1D0-510 in no time (probably a couple of weeks to a month. Two months at the most.)

    Best of luck.

I typed out a reply last night but it said that it must be approved by a moderator?

Anyhow, thank you for the information. I was originally going to go for a MSCT Windows Vista Config cert since I had the study guide on hand. However the information you provided seems like a smarter and more useful method for me to get a good solid cert to be enrolled with.

Would it be smart to order a couple of study guides or is something like uCert sufficient enough when combined with the study notes you linked?

    Thanks again ERP!

erpadmin, you are my hero! That mcmcse.com site that you posted in the thread earlier also has study guides for the CIW JavaScript class and Security+ (201 test though). Too bad they don't have anything on MS SQL 2008 certs.

Can anyone tell me about how long it takes to get your results and how you are notified? I kind of feel like my enrollment counselor could have done a better job at guiding me. I had done my own research and knew I had to take an admissions test, but was never instructed on when and how that worked. I had a phone interview and then I applied and then after not hearing anything back from him, I decided to get on the website and see if I could get on the student portal and that's how I found out about the admissions test and also that financial aid needed some additional info from me. I e-mailed my enrollment counselor 3 days ago to ask how long it would take to get my results, but haven't heard back yet.

The ECs are the weakest link at WGU, unfortunately. I suspect it's a mix of too many students to take care of and not enough ECs.

You should get your results in about 15 minutes or so. You should see a green checkmark on each of the 4 sections of the entrance exam. you'll get an email later on telling you that you passed.

Just the typical stuff: It's not well-known, potential prejudices to online education from employers, no ranking, etc. I haven't found it to be much of a problem in my career but there are some people on the forums with some pretty strong opinions on it. My story is anecdotal a but I can tell you that I got TONS of calls right after I graduated, got offered two different network engineer positions, and I'm making six figures right now. That's also a result of a mix of different IT experience, my certifications, my resume, and my interviewing skills. I am sure my degree helped and I know that my current company's HR won't allow someone to become an FTE without a degree but other company's have different policies and I might have gotten a network engineer position with a different company without a degree if their HR policies were different.

For instance, while the nursing degree program mentioned is accredited by the Commission for Collegiate Nursing Education...what is widely considered the best nursing accreditation is the National League for Nursing, which is one of the things I was basing my opinion on.

Doesn't matter. as long as you can sit the RN exam then that's all that really matters when it comes to being a nurse unless you plan on becoming a nurse practitioner.

Edit: I'm a pretty young guy so hopefully by the time I'm 30, on-line degrees will become a lot more common.
