VLAN Trunking

hey all,
What is the point of a trunk connection between 2 switches? Besides the security and reduced traffic?
What I'm asking I suppose is why would I want two PC's on separate VLAN's not to be able to ping one another?
Seems more sensible to stick a router or multilayer-switch in there rather than trunking 2 switches?
apologies if this seems really dense.. coming back after a month long break to do the ICND2..
Thanks for reading

Leave the monkies alone! They've got problems enough as it is!
