What is the important difference between the [passive-interface] and [network mask] techniques in EIGRP.

If you used the net mask to exclude interfaces not in the classful range then they wouldn't be advertised into EIGRP. If you used the passive interface those networks would still be advertised into EIGRP, but would not form neighbors.
I think that is what your question is getting at....An expert is a man who has made all the mistakes which can be made.
