I need some career advice

qwertyiopqwertyiop Member Posts: 725 ■■■□□□□□□□
I currently work part-time as a Jr. Net Admin with no benefits and have a 25-30 minute commute to work.

I was offered a job as a Help Desk Specialist at a huge company with full benefits and only a 10-15 minute commute.

Is this a job that I should go for?

What are the pay differences and what will you be doing at the other company and what are you doing now. Some Jr Net Admin jobs is help desk and some help desk can encompass more then one would think.

I guess a few questions can help answer this.

    How old are you?
    Do you have kids?
    Are you married?

If you are young, and don't have kids and not married then i would say stick with the job you have for right now until a Admin position comes along.

If you need the money - then yes.
If this helpdesk job also includes some jr. admin duties, and they just title it helpdesk - then maybe.
    Otherwise - No
    IT guy since 12/00

Recent: 11/2019 - RHCSA (RHEL 7); 2/2019 - Updated VCP to 6.5 (just a few days before VMware discontinued the re-cert policy...)
    Working on: RHCE/Ansible
Future: Probably continued Red Hat Immersion, Possibly VCAP Design, or maybe a completely different path. Depends on job demands...

At my current job I have the title of Jr Net Admin but I really am the only IT person here therefore I do it all from helpdesk, phone support, PBX, software\hardware purchases and setup. AD, firewall, VPN, Group Policies, Server maintenance and setup.

I would stay where you are at. You are getting more exp where you are at then you would doing just straight helpdesk. You can move up from here for your next job, you will move up to the job you currently have from the helpdesk job.

Maybe you should post this under Jobs Forum!

But leaving an admin job and going to Help desk doesn't seem appealing to me.

I would say, if there is a career path - which there probably is because its a big company - and if they pay more, then follow the money.

I have to disagree with doing more for less. You already have the experience. If a potential employers asks why you left the job, just tell them you had to do what was best for your family.

I'd say to follow what you think best helps your family...but you must be thinking somewhat longterm. Like it was mentioned before, some "help desk" jobs do system admin type duties...its my opinion that they name the position help desk so that they only have to advertise pay at a help desk range.

Anyway, I digress...if the job is straight help desk but you see an upcoming opening in network/system admin with the company then i'd go for it...if the job is just straight help desk and all you can expect is to be in the help desk...then to me...for what i'm trying to accomplish...its just not worth it. You'll have to decide for yourself though.
