Can i ask your opinion on if it would be worthwhile for a complete newbie to juniper to do this?

Man its always wise to get Certified. For starters you can start with JNCIA -ER ,all the material you will need are the on the Juniper Fast track website.

And if you would want hands on experience you can use Olive on Vmware or you can look for some J series routers on e-bay.

To be frank with you I have always been a cisco guy but ever since i got my hands on Juniper routers and started learning about Junos i cant stop cause its pretty interesting

    Try it .

I just looked these over, and I am certainly considering putting off my Microsoft exams for these!! I downloaded all of the elearning and they look very informative. Can't do any owrse then getting a free exam voucher.

Since I am new to Juniper, can I have an explanation on "Olive", as mentioned in other posts?

That's one of the problems. You would have to buy it for it be legal which would be expensive. Buying J series stuff on ebay is expensive too. Some remote racks would be good saving the hassle and messing around with PC's setting up olive and what have you. Im not aware of any remote rack hire companies out there but haven't looked. You can build stuff at home using Olive but I understand it can be a real pain to get everything working properly.

Im pleased the Juniper offer is still open though and hopefully they will extend it well into 2010 when I have some time to look at JunOS!

Isn't that what Olives are for, or are those something else?

With the purchase of a Juniper Router.

Illegal options icon_pirat.gif to acquire the JunOS are NOT allowed topics of discussion on TechExams.net -- and anyone who can't figure out what they'd need from the Olive instructions and how to find things on the Internet probably isn't ready for a "big boy" certification like Juniper anyway. :D

There are some Juniper Rack Rental places on the web -- and they are expensive. A couple places I checked out charged by the router and time.

The J2300s have been going around $400 - $500 (US) on eBay, with some used J2300 selling in the $200-300 range.

Noted. I just read the Olive page and I got ya drifticon_lol.gif. I thought that Olive was something the Juniper supported but that page made it pretty clear....

the J series routers are crazy $$$ and I think that I will sit this out until I get some more $$$icon_redface.gif

EDIT: I put legally at the end of my first post because I am not thief, so I wanted to see if there was a legal option (like downloading checkpoint's splat platform from there site) .

I hope so as well but for now I am focusing on Cisco and Linux. Juniper can come next year but unlikely since I have seen very few jobs wanting juniper certs...oh well

Since I want to work for an ISP I think it may be valuable, after the CCIP..

If you would know Martini's are juniper chip sets in early generations.. :) Supposedly they love all gin based drinks in Juniper and hence the name Juniper..

You know, that pretest has a hell of a lot of equipment specific questions. Tried the pre-test first... and now I know what I need to work on:)

Could it be learned with out owning a router or switch for Juniper? The fact that you can get a free voucher is extremely tempting. I feel very inclined to trying.

What is the order of certification for the Juniper? From this PDF I take it that JNCIA-ER is the first.

    Levels of certification:
    JNCIA - Associate
JNCIS - Specialist (you can start here, JNCIA is not a pre-req)
JNCIP - Professional (lab exam, seem to be moving away from this level on new tracks)
    JNCIE - Expert (lab exam)

    Tracks of certification:
    ER - Enterprise Routing
    M/T - M/T Series Routers/Service Provider Routing
    E - ERX Series Routers
    EX - Enterprise Switching
and so on...... they have a lot of tracks. hopefully they'll be collapsing and combining some.

Where you start all depends what you're comfortable with. Seeing I work a lot with the ERX platform, I did the JNCIA-E and JNCIS-E back in the day before starting to focus on M/T.

Of course. That's pretty much the case with any hands-off cert.

Remembering the content after you get certified is another story.

This is definitely worth a try. A free certification (not including time allotted for studying) can't be beat. Plus, the materials are ALL free. ;)

I've been working with Cisco Routers 10 months, through CCNA1, CCNA2 and CCNA3 Exploration and i'm looking to do some Juniper stuff, what is best, i've downloaded the material from the fast track program and i'm going to read and practise the stuff, what exam should i go for?
  • nelnel Member Posts: 2,859 ■□□□□□□□□□
So are they not doing the firewall track too? i would like to get some exposure to that and would be v. tempted if it were a freebie? Only thing that has put me off is the lack of study material from what i can see. Oh, and the equipment price of course :D

Hrm, I may have to side track for a sec after I finish CCDP and bone up on my Juniper skills. Free chance at making my resume look better is too good to pass up

Of course, only you can decide.

That stated: why not start with JNCIA-ER?

The JNCIA-ER would be a great place to start indeed.

How about the JNCIS-SEC cert? The movement for Juniper is to be using the new SRX boxes to slowly replace the Netscreen firewalls. Also JUNOS-ES, which the SRX boxes are based off of, is drawn from ScreenOS and so will have many similarities with it.
