Unemployment benefit in the US, how does it work?
binarysoul
I read in a thread here that someone couldn't get unemployment benefits because he/she earned a lot b4 he lost his job. So, I'm wondering how unemployment insurance work in the US.
In Canada it's called EI (Employment Insurance). Unless you were fired or resigned, you can get 55% of your gross income for up to 52 weeks; you must have worked about 700 hours in the last 52 weeks. It's a complex system, but that is how it works in a nutshell.

Unemployment in the US will vary from State to State...
Check this out:

As mentioned, it's different state by state. In many cases it is a state-operated, but wholly employer funded program.
In a couple of cases I can recall the federal government stepping in and extending unemployment benefits, but that's rare.
