Config Question

Hey everyone... I have a question config question.

I have connected (2) 2501s together (R1 and R2).

I have issued "erase nvram:" on both just to make sure I am starting from scratch.

On R1 I have set the Serial0 interface with an IP of 1.1.1.1 255.0.0.0, issued the no-shutdown command, and set the clock rate to 64000 as I have plugged the DCE end of the cable in.

I have taken the DTE end of the cable and plugged it into R2's Serial0 interface. Prior to me doing this R2 had a clean running-config. I reloaded R2.
For some reason R2 has its Serial0 interface configured with 1.1.1.2/8 and I did not input this configuration. Did R2's Serial0 auto-configure itself to be on the same subnet as R1's Serial 0 interface?

I just wiped R2 completely. I again plugged in the DTE cable and reloaded again. R2's Serial0 is configured again to be on R1's Serial subnet with an IP of 1.1.1.2.

Is this normal...?

Here is also something interesting. When R2 is not plugged into anything except for the console cable, it performs the boot process and then takes me to the point where I am asked whether I want to enter setup mode or not. But, if I perform a boot when plugged into R1 (and R1 has been configured), then the boot process shows these lines:

What are you config register settings? Looks like your routers are trying to find a network config from a t.f.t.p server (in the form of a broadcast). Have you done a copy run start and then reload the router? Does it keep the settings? If you paste your running config, I could run the in Packet Tracer tonight and tell you what happens? Or if you want to wait till friday, I could put your config on my 1721s and see what happens for me?

Hey!

That's the thing... my config is totally empty... I wouldn't have anything to paste. I thought the same thing (that R2 is looking for a startup-config from a t.f.t.p), but I cannot understand how an IP gets configured.....

Also, I checked the config register. It is set at 2102.

Problem: Service Configuration Error Messages

Occasionally, during bootup of Cisco hardware through Cisco IOS software, error messages similar to these are displayed:
%Error opening tftp://255.255.255.255/network-confg (Socket error)

%Error opening tftp://255.255.255.255/cisconet.cfg (Socket error)

%Error opening tftp://255.255.255.255/3620-confg (Socket error)

%Error opening tftp://255.255.255.255/3620.cfg (Socket error)

These error messages are related to the default service configuration option built into Cisco IOS software, which attempts to access the service configuration files from a network Trivial File Transfer Protocol (TFTP) server.

Solution

In order to disable this feature, issue the no service config global command.
Router#config terminal
Enter configuration commands, one per line.

Router(config)#no service config

Router(config)#exit

Router#copy running-config startup-config
These error messages no longer appear at the next bootup of the router.

Hey Mike, thanks... I now recall reading about this in Lammle's Book.

I was wondering though, how did the router configure an IP on its interface Serial 0 by itself.

I have tried recreating this situation and it keeps happening each time!

I totally unplugged R2 from everything (except power and my console connection). I issued the "erase nvram:" and did a reload. I did a "show running-config" and there is no interface (Ethernet0, Serial0, and Serial1) that has been configured with an IP.

Next, I connect R2's Serial0 interface to R1's Serial0 interface (the serial0 on R1 has been configured with 1.1.1.1 255.0.0.0). Now when I reload R2 (without applying any configuration at all), i do a "show running-config," and R2 has been configured with 1.1.1.2 255.0.0.0 on its Serial0 interface.

I am just not sure if this is normal as I have not read about this type of situation in any of my books (that I can remember).
