lab question

OK, I know you guys are probably going to joke on me pretty hard for asking this, but I've got to figure it out. I bought myself a 2950 switch to help study for the ccent. Well I've gone into the switch via the console port and gave the switch an IP on 192.168.1.50, but I cannot ping or telnet to the switch. I have a patch cord from my NIC on the back of my computer going to fa 0/1 on the switch. When I plugged them in, the port came up. Why can't I ping or telnet to the switch? Thanks for your help and try to not joke on me to bad!

Are you in the right subnet? Check your IP and subnet mask on the PC. Also check to make sure you are using a straight through cable and not a cross-over.

Did you wait long enough for STP to do it's magic? Or did you configure the port for portfast?

Is it a straight through cable from your pc to the FA0/1 port?

What's the subnet for that 192.168.1.50 IP address on the switch? Is that under the VLAN 1 interface?

What's your IP address on the PC? What's the subnet?

A firewall issue would usually allow you to ping the switch from the PC but fail when pinging from the switch to the PC..... so it's probably not firewall related (unless you've beefed up security on your PC or are using a secured version of Linux).

You have to define a password on the switch under the VTY ports to telnet -- but you'd probably get a message saying you don't have a password configured if that was the problem.....

I'd guess cable or simple configuration issue for now.

I'm gonna go with

Switch(config)# int vlan <# here>
Switch(config-if)# no shut

You have to set a password for vty access. Mostly what Mike said above. I think you probably forgot to issue no shut on the vlan you assigned the IP to. Make sure you put the port the PC is plugged into in the same VLAN as the vlan you assigned the ip address to.

Switch(config-if)# switchport access vlan <# here>

Thanks for all of the comments. With you guys suggesting to check my subnet on my pc, it made me find that I did not have a IP or subnet assigned on my pc. Since I am setting everything up from scratch, I don't even have my lab pc connected to anything but the switch, so there wasn't any dhcp to assign it an ip. So I just went into my nic and assigned it a static ip and subnet, and suprise, surprise, it allowed me to telnet. Thanks for you guys help!
