I have scheduled to take it as well. For now it is on Oct 3. I hope to move it to Oct 12 in a week or so. Prometric would not let me schedule out that far yet.

You might want to change the title since 71-686 is actually the exam for the windows 7 desktop administrator, 71-685 is the windows 7 desktop support tech

I registered for it and it's scheduled for the 9th. I hope to give myself a little more time. I just started studying for the 621 so I have the All in One book for that. It seems semi relevant. I started creating a study guide and plan to make a deployment image with the new WAIK. Otherwise I am a little lost for what to study. There is a ton of stuff in the awesome resources thread though!

yes they are free however you dont get your result straight away. If you have a look at the link in the first post that blog lets you know about any that are available but you need to be quick as the slots are filled pretty quickly.

Ugh. I tried to register today. I only found out about the beta exams yesterday while doing some research on Windows 7 exams.

Said both codes reached their maximum use. :{ Bummer, I really wanted to take both exams for free :/

What is the 'best' way to get notified of beta microsoft exams? I'm a busy person, so checking forums constantly isn't really an option. Is there a mailing list I can get onto somehow?

OK, so I took the 71-685 today. I did so under pretty limited study. I watched a few videos, and read up on some of the technology, all of which I located through the following thread.

    71-686 Resources

I have to say that I found a good half of the exam to be pretty much "common sense". That is of course according to my opinion and experience.

Really, just go over the objectives. Know about Portable workstations, WWANS, WLANS, VPN's, Subnets. Read up on BitLocker and APPLocker. Read up on IE8 and new group policy options. Know your Event and Performance Monitors/Logs. Know how to troubleshoot problems with applications, boot up, deployment and hardware issues. icon_study.gif

If you can (and I wish I did), play around with a Windows server 2008 environment that has Windows 7 clients connected as members of a domain. I think that would be a great help.

I never feel like I can give a good detailed description of what to study because I don't want to go over the line and violate the NDA. So, I apologize for the lackluster description.

Best of Luck to you all!

No, that was good information. Unfortunately I don't think the Desktop Admin test is going to be so easy... Seem pretty heavy on deploy tools. Has any one taken it yet?

I friend of mine took just before I took the 71-685. He said it was quite a bit more difficult than he expected.

For that exam, he recommends focusing a lot on new group policies, Image creation and deployment and Branch cache. Basically, again, if you have the time to go through the resources that Hyper-Me listed in 71-686 Resources thread, it sounds like you stand a decent chance of passing the exam.

How long roughly do you have to wait after sitting the exam to find out if you have passed anyway?
