.msi files

anyone ever had a freshly installed windows xp pro machine not recognize an .msi install file?

I ran into this yesterday and can't figure out how to install this program.

What is the error?

There is no error, it comes up asking with "open with" box.

You're missing Windows Installer. Install SP3 or Windows Installer itself.
