70-284 First or 70-236?

Do you all think it would be helpful for me to take the 70-284 first since this exam will give me the messaging credential for MCSA also I can learn in general about how Exchange works, and then start the 2k7 track, do you all think this is a good idea? Current environment does not have exchange 2003 though only 2k7, but I was thinking 70-284 might help me for the rest of the 2007 exchange exams while also giving me the MCSA:M certification.

Thanks in advance,

I wouldn't do 2003 unless you were currently working with it. 2007 is fairly different. Keep in mind that 2010 is going to be out soon as well. The beta for that one was last month.

Im preparing the 70-284 too, but different or not the Exchange 2007 and the 2010, i think the baseline of IT come always from the past....
And will help u to understand how the things change, no?

I think it can go either way. Do you work with Exchange 2003 or do you have the ability to do a bit of 2003 work after you pass your exam? If so, definitely do the Exchange 2003 exam and then move onto Exchange 2007/2010. If you have no plans to work with Exchange 2003, go the Exchange 2007/2010 route.

If you don't work with Exchange 2003 but don't have a problem first doing the Exchange 2003 exam and then moving right onto Exchange 2007/2010, t hat of course will be the most beneficial, especially since it will help you with an understanding of how an Exchange 2003 to an Exchange 2007/2010 migration works.

Remember, you can't migrate from 5.5 to 2007 or 2010 directly. You have to go to 2003 first. Also, a migration from 2003 to 2007 or 2010 will be more complex than 2007 to 2010. So you may still find yourself needing to work with Exchange 2003 if you're doing Exchange consulting.

What separates the proverbial men from the boys with Exchange is usually the ability to perform migrations. If you want to be an Exchange god, I would still complete the 2003 cert first. If you just want to be an Exchange admin, and you know you won't be working with 2003, then I'd skip it.
    Good luck to all!

You also can't migrate from GroupWise to 2007 directly or any third-party messaging platform to 2010 directly. Using 2003 or another third-party tool is the way to go. So you have the choice of learning 2003 or some combination of Quest and Binary Tree software.

I agree with Royal and HP. If you want to consult, learn 2003 and take 284 first. If you only want to admin your current environment, 236 would be fine. All but one of my Exchange consulting gigs so far has been a migration.

Neither test is easy without experience, though.

Thanks for the feedback, I've decided on 70-284 first and then moving on to 70-236. I'm going to get the Self-Paced Training Kit book for the 70-284 this weekend from my local bookstore, I hope they have one for this exam? I'll be a more frequent visitor now to this section of the forums I guess, icon_lol.gif

    thanks,

Good choice. I still think Exchange 2003 is important to know.
