While not always true, the way it was explained to me was the Exam Certification guide was for someone with broad subject knowledge that needs a refresher prior to the exam.

The Self Study guide is designed to help learn the material from the ground up.

My experience has been that the more material you get to read/study/watch/lab the better off you will be.
