Microsoft ActiveSync Question

Does anyone here use/know much about this MS ActiveSync application?

It says it is used to sync outlook data between pc and phone.

here is my situtation. Outlook is hosted by a 3rd party, which is not going to configure activesync on the exchange server itself. Our administrators here use iPhones and want to sync it (wirelessly), but as of now, I cant.

Will this program fill that gap? Again, I have no ability to alter the exchange server.

**uhh, I just saw the 'versions of the mobile operating system' - and of course, no iPhone. I'll leave teh thread up though in case anyone has anything interesting to add.

Apart from iPhones not being compatible with it, since you want to sync wireless the actual ActiveSync app on your desktop won't help at all. As far as I know the app itself is only able to sync with Windows Mobile devices connected through COM, USB or Bluetooth.

Actually there is a ActiveSynch that will synch Win Mobile devices with an Exchange server, but it is a enterprise level version and will need to be installed on the Exchange server. Which, by the sounds of it won't work for you as the host of your Exchange server will not install it.

I haven't worked with the iphone myself but there is a way to synch it with the exchange server using the imap protocol. But again, I think there is a piece that needs to be installed on the Exchange server.

ActiveSync is a service provided by the Exchange server and it is built in to Exchange itself. You don't need to install it, just configure it. I haven't seen a provider of hosted Exchange services that charges extra for ActiveSync.

ActiveSync is included in all current iPhone OS versions and the newest 3Gs even supports encryption. Google also licensed activesync technology for the android OS and it works flawlessly on my Droid. The Palm Pre also supports activesync natively, but neither the droid nor the pre support encryption. The download you were looking at was for Windows Mobile and is not necessary for other phone OSes.
