interface status

I am interconnecting two routers a 831 and a 3620. The interface on the 831 is operational but the interfaces on the 3620 shows ethernet is up, line protol down. I checked for the usuals: keepalives, encapsulation and to see if the interface was shut down but nothing changed.

The 3620 was also unable to ping its on interface and the link lights were off. When i tried connecting the switch to the router the link lights came on and the status of the 3620 interface changed to ethernet is up, line protol down.

I really don't know how to fix this one, any suggestions?

are you using a cross over cable for connecting 2 routers directly
