Auto summary question

When using Rip v2 are you supposed to always issue the no auto command? In class we always did it but I was wondering if this is common practice in the real world.

Well, using RIP at all isn't really that common in the real world, but when it is used auto summary has been disabled from what I have seen.

Yes. A real world example would be when a cable ISP assigns you a /29 block and gives you a managed router. The router usually uses RIPv2 with "no auto-summary" configured. This is then redistributed into their IGP. This /29 block is usually a subnet of a class A with many other /29 blocks being assigned to other customers.
