    Majority of the security tools out there are open source Unix applications so I guess for the non IT crowd in law enforcement issuing Macs makes sense.

    No offense, but if they're not IT, they shouldn't be messing with security tools.

    The core of the Mac OS is *nix. If the user is a *nix guru (they should be a *nix guru if they are in security), they can re-compile the Unix security tools to work with their Mac.
