1st day at work newbie question

Hi guys,

I have a quick question. HR administrator from the job I'm starting tomorrow morning sent me an e-mail some time ago and said that there will be a new employee orientation at 9AM on Monday (tomorrow) morning that I need to go to. The orientation takes place about 10-15 walking minutes from where I'll actually be working. My question is should I go to the orientation first or go to the place I will work at and meet with my supervisor first? I'm pretty sure that my supervisor is aware of the orientation but I don't want to take any chances. Would you guys advise me to go to my boss first or the orientation?

If you've been given no further information, go to the orientation first. Showing up without them knowing you're coming there can actually be a pain in their asses. If they wanted you to come first to the site, they would have told you to do so.

how's about you contact the new boss to confirm that he/she knows that you'll be going to orientation first? That way, all bases are covered...

Went to the orientation first which took almost 2 hours, and then went to my boss straight away. She seemed happy to see me so I guess that's a good sign..

I will work with several other technicians and today and for the rest of the week (and likely next week as well) they're showing me around and helping me getting acclamated. I got my own office (I couldn't believe it!), with a good computer - new 20'' iMac with Snow Leopard! and they're getting me Parallels and Windows 7 and some other stuff later this week. So far I'm having a lot of fun. Everyone are amazingly nice and so easy to get along with. I myself is a very quite guy and I was worried about that going in to work today, but my co-workers are so good hearted and so funny there's really no way I couldn't fit in. I didn't really do much today other than mirroring some techs and watch them fix stuff and listen to them as they explain things I need to know about how the place works but I was never bored for a second. I just really hope they like me. They all seem like such amazing people.

The 1st Job / 1st day at work is always special ... but just a personal advice always try to stay ahead of what is happening ( within your Work Place ) so that co-workers trust and have confidence in you

I didn't want to make another thread about me and my job so I'll post my little update in here. So the job is really good and people are really nice. I have two senior to me technicians and two managers that I answer to. What I do though is a little different than what I thought I'd be doing. I thought the job will be a lot of helpdesk and desktop support. Although I do a little bit of that main part of my job is working on projects, though they haven't given me much stuff to do yet and leave desktop support tickets to our part-time workers (we actually have a lot of them). Anyway, this week there will be a meeting purpose of which will be to delegate the projects we have between us and hopefully they trust me enough to let me work on some of them.

My biggest worry and my biggest concern is still my probation period. I know I worry too much but it's always so important to me that my co-workers and managers like me and to my disadvantage I tend to say stupid stuff that leave my co-workers go "....umm, ok" a lot. I'm also kind of a quite guy. I hope that I can impress them with the work I do there and that they like me. I think I'm a nice guy, but sometimes that's not enough. These next few month can't pass fast enough
