Hi, just wondering how this would work.

I have a cisco 871 which ive been using for my home ADSL. I have a 3550 which id like to add to the network and have pcs connect to the switch instead. What i have done is create a routed port on the 3550 which then connects to the 871, which then connects to the modem/internet. On the 3550 ive created a SVI for vlan 11 and then connected a PC with an IP of say 192.168.11.10 to a port in vlan11.

Would it be ok then to run a default route on the 3550 pointing to the vlan 1 interface on the 871 ?

The thing is the 871 has one layer 3 port which connects off to the net and then 4 integrated switchports. How will it work with connecting one of these switchports to the routed port on the 3550 ?

I ran ospf on the 871 and 3550 and it seemed to pick up the neighbours fine.

So the 871 is being used for NAT and the 3550 for inter-vlan routing.

Any ideas ?

This will work fine, very common.

Can you put an IP on the 871 VLAN? Make sure its in the same subnet as the routed ported on the 3550.
