Last Minute Clarifications

Ok, I just needs these issues quickly cleared up before I write the exam. Everybook seems to contradict the other.

My study book: Mike Meyers All-In-One Exam Guide 2nd Edition
My practice test book: Test Yourself Network+ Certification 2nd Edition

1) Repeaters

Study book says a repeater DOES NOT amplify the signal only recreates and forwards.

Test book says repeater amplifies signal and forwards.

2) ISDN

Study book says PRI has 24 B channels.

Test book says PRI has 23 B channels.

3) Overall Exam

Study book says I will ace the exam.

Test book says I will just pass the exam.

The material in the passport book is shaky for instance Passport book state Terminal Adaptors is for ISDN line and however when I took the Network+ exam they asked that question and it was ISDN adaptor.

However, this book is good for directing you which area the test covers. Therefore, once you read the book, read up on the subject the book state a going to on the test.

Know Your ports!!!!!!! and which port uses UDP or TCP because, you will see them

According to my CCDA book, which is the most trustworthy book I've ever bought/read as it comes to networking, repeater "take incoming frames, regenerate the preamble, amplify the signals, and send out the frame out of all other interfaces." (ISBN 0-7357-0074-5)
Ask yourself what use a repeater has when it cannot amplify a signal...

US and Japanese version of PRI has 23 B channels, most other parts of the world PRI has 30 B channels.

Yea, I get the feeling Mike Meyers isn't 100% on his information or maybe the All-In-One series in general isn't 100%. After reading through both Mike Meyers' A+ and Network+ book, I feel that he doesn't go into detail enough on some of the subjects.

I'm planning on doing my Server+ after I finish Network+, can anyone recommend me a book that has in-depth coverage of the objectives? I was looking to go with Sybex since they are pretty popular.

Webmaster, you're right about the repeater's use regarding amplification but keep in mind that if you amplify a signal, you also amplify the noise within that signal. If the signal was amplified too many times wouldn't the noise become so bad that the signal-to-noise ratio wouldn't matter?

I always thought there were actual amplifiers that can be used in a network. Let me double check my Novell Certification book.

but when an analog is amplified it still has the noise and the noise is amplified
