Tips for troubleshooting bad packages?

So our desktop group has been struggling with a software package that seems to hang whenever it's loaded, on any machine. Even newly imaged devices. Apparently it installs fine on images other than ours, so we need to find out what is causing it to stop during install.

The package log file doesn't say much. I may do a filemonitor, but anyone have some tips or suggestions I could try to pinpoint the cause?

    What OS?
Is this a repackaged deployment - such as Wise or SMS Installer - or a vendor package?
Is this a .EXE or an .MSI?

Your next step should be to enable logging. A repackaged installation should have the option to log all of its activities so you can see where the package is failing. If this is an MSI, you can enable verbose logging as a part of the installation through command line switches. An MSI should write Windows Installer events to the event log so be sure to check that as well.

    Msiexec (command-line options)

WinXP, and they are .exe packages.

On investigation it was revealed to be an access patch causing the loader to hang.
