No you don't need more than 1 console cable. Those are just for console access. Set everything up that up need then SSH/telnet into the boxes.

IMO I would pick it up if you are looking for a budget CCNA kit but I am not sure if that is enough. With only 1 switch you really can't see STP, VTP, and Trunking in action. With 2 routers you really can't see rip, eigrp, ospf in action. Plus the 2610 has a 10b port which basically means that you can't run 802.1q on that port*. I would suggest looking at some 1721s (at least 3) and 2-3 2950s or 2 2950s and a 3550 if you have the cash. Console cables can be had pretty cheap but if you don't have a serial port on any of your boxes, invest in a usb console cable. Also 12.2 IOS is pretty aged.

    * There is talk that you can do this but I have never been able to make dot1q work on a 10mb port.

    Noel,

Cisco 2610XM Router CCNA CCVP CCNP LAB 2600 128/32 12.4 on eBay (end time 26-Feb-10 10:53:41 GMT) is not a bad buy it now price with the IOS and memory. Remember thought it is not £35 it £47 with delivery. £12 is standard rate delivery for that weight.

The 26**XMs can get rediculously pricey and even the price of the 1721s is starting to crank up but about £30 including delivery is about the right price for these. Ebay sellers know these are common fodder for CCNA students so they hike the price up. If you can find them with WIC-1T / WIC-2Ts and lots of memory and IOS as close to 12.4 as you can, all the better. Grab this for it as well which is cheap and will come in very handy from CCNA and onward. (56k max clock though) CISCO NM-4A/S for 2600 2610xm Routers CCNA CCNP LAB on eBay (end time 19-Feb-10 15:30:08 GMT)

The 25**s do have serial ports in built already but the IOS and command syntax is quite out of date so you will need to know what you should be typing on your exam.

For switches, 2950Ts/3550s are good, 2950s / 3500XLs are OK for ccna. The dfferentiation is how usefull will this kit be to you after CCNA. Could you use some of what you buy be used if you go on to CCNP or will you have to get rid of it and buy different.

This is where the 12.4T IOS comes in as that is the IOS for CCNP - even the new CCNP apparantly. To store and run this IOS version (presuming you can get hold of it for the model of router you have) you need quite a lot of memory on the device. If it doesn't have it already, you'll need to upgrade it which will add extra cost. (which is why the 2610xm is a good price on a buy it now)

I would grab the 2610xm quick and then spend some time researching the masses of equipment based articles and stickies in the ccna forum and also look on Wendels blog on CCNA equipment. There is a recent article with a link to it here http://www.techexams.net/forums/ccna-ccent/50939-updated-hardware-list-ccna.html
