Got some free hardware :)

I've been aggrevated with my sim since I realized that it doesn't support all the commands to follow along in in the ICND1 book.

So I started looking around for a switch to practice on.....

Here at the vocational center where I teach, the wiring closet is in my classroom. I noticed today that there is a Catalyst 3550 that hasn't been connected or powered on in the 3 years I've been here. So I checked with our school district IT guy and he said I could have at it - just backup the config.......

So....today I got a refresher course in password recovery and tftp backup, lol. I did it back in my acadamy days 5 years ago, but had pretty much forgotten it all. Google is my friend.....

I'm good to go now, though. It doesn't look like I would have gotten to play with one of these 3550's otherwise, judging by the prices on ebay

Spoke too soon..lol. I just realized it has IOS 12.1 on it so it STILL doesn't support the SSH config I was trying to do in the simulator. I'm off now to google how to upgrade the IOS on this thing, but if anyone has any comments or tips while I do so, feel free.

Edit to add - Is the IOS version my problem here? It says 12.1(13)EA1a

The version number will help you determine if it supports SSH and the various versions(is that your ur problem?)

Thanks for the link. Based on my IOS image, it doesn't support SSH.

Should I just leave the IOS alone since the switch doesn't actually belong to me? Would I have to register it under my name on Cisco.com to access the downloads for it?

Switch IOS can be downloaded with a guest account. Back up the old config and IOS. Gives you good practice at that too!
