Cert Guide vs Self Study Guide

Hi all,

Can someone give me an insight into the differences between the Cert Guide and the Self Study Guide? I've read the descriptions on the Cisco Press web site but it's not clear.

As far as the new ROUTE exam is concerned, will "Implementing Cisco IP Routing (ROUTE)" be the Self Study guide? (Due out in June)?

Thanks.

You can find an explanation of the different book types on the Cisco Press web site - these are the highlights about the 2 you asked about.
    Who should read Self-Study Guides?
The primary audience is networking professionals new to a subject area who need to build a learning foundation on a networking subject and who need an on-the-job desk reference. The secondary audience is Cisco course attendees who use these guides as supplements to their course material or networking professionals who need early-stage self-study materials for an exam.
Who should read Exam Certification Guides?
These are mid- to late-stage exam guides that help readers master exam concepts. These books are written for readers who have conceptual, hands-on knowledge of the material and need to concentrate their study efforts before sitting for the exam.
Usually you want to use both book series, when they are available, for an exam.
The new CCNP Exam Certification Guides and Quick Reference Sheets are out now, with the Authorized Self-Study Guides to follow soon -- so yes, that's the ROUTE Authorized Self-Study Guide due out in June.

    Thanks mate.

It's a shame they are releasing the Cert Guide before the Study Guide as it sounds like the latter would be the best one to read first.

I agree. I'm just making a start on the CCNP, starting with the Route exam so I bought the BSCI study guide and the Route Cert Guide.

There is so much overlap in the topics that will probably be sufficient. Also the Route Cert Guide is written by Wendell Odom so if his other books are anything to go by, it'll probably be enough on its own!!
