ios/config trouble

jamesleecolemanjamesleecoleman Member Posts: 1,899 ■■■■■□□□□□
Alright so I tried out the erase startup-config. There was alot of junk in there that I didn't use. I made sure that I saved a copy of that configuration. I made a new configuration and saved that as 3640router-confg-new to the tftp server on my desktop. Then I found an IOS on the flash card that my 3640 has so I tried to boot into that and now I can't get back to the old IOS that's actually on the router. The laptop that is connected by roll over cable is now giving me all these errors of trying to open configuration files from my tftp server!!! It actually loaded a configuration file from the server by itself!!! Now (as in right now as I type) it's looking for other config files. "Error opening tftp://255.255.255.255/network-confg" and cisconet.cfg timed out. Now I can't even copy any IOS into the tftp server from the 3640. I was able to copy the IOS off the 2621 at 14kbps. Why so slow over fastethernet?? Does anyone have any ideas what I messed up??? Everything worked fine before I tried to boot from the IOS on the flash card.
Booya!!

When the router does not have a configuration located in NVRAM, it will attempt to pull a config from a local server which is resolved via broadcast.

Once you save a basic config into NVRAM you will not see this issue after you reload.

If you loaded IOS from a PCMCIA card then you should copy a new IOS image to flash: and reload the device, be sure to pull out the PCMCIA flash card.

If your router boots into rommon> after you remove the PCMCIA flash card, from rommon> you can use the command boot flash: and it will boot the first image found in flash.

I had the basic configuration saved on the router. I took the card out and rebooted the router because I did see an IOS in the flash on the router. It took me to rommon> (noodles :P) but I couldn't get it from there. The flash card has the "c3640-js-mz.122-14.bin"

Could it be that it's trying to boot the "no" file seen by the show flash command but I'm not really sure. I tried to find online how to actually boot the IOS but I haven't had any luck.

boot the router using the pcmcia card, then once booted, delete the flash:no file.

Then squeze the flash using the "squeeze flash" command. remove the pcmcia flash card and reboot the device.

You can also boot the router from rommon by specifying boot flash:c3640-i-mz.121-19.bin

the tftp error can be fix with this

    conf t
    no service config
    exit
    wr
    reload
    confirm {yes}

This happens all the time on my 2950's and 2600xm's.
