Area of Specialty

Every once in a while I log into the MCP site and attempt to check what paths I have partially completed in the Certification Planer. So I went to do it today... and seen something weird.

"Area of Specialty -- Desktop Virtualization"

Apparently I need 70-656 along with my already passed 70-401 to get it. But what the heck IS it?

When I first read your post, I thought 'huh'? But now I see what you mean.

Just checked TS: Microsoft Desktop Optimization Pack, Configuring. Interesting to see that Microsoft has a cert to cover the helpdesk support position with basics of higher end services, like SQL, MOM...

I could of done with this a few years back. I still don't know about SMS.

Looks like it goes over terminal server concepts, thin clients, etc. Hence, the Desktop Virtualization tag.

But what is thos "Area of Specialty"? We aren't talking MCTS. Is this something messed up or something old? And why link it to SCCM?

Well I guess the Area of specialty cert would comprise of a bunch of different technologies that a desktop technician could utilise for his position. Just like an MCITP:EMA would specialise in all things Microsoft communications, and not just have an Exchange MCTS cert.

Just as an FYI, nothing in this is directed at desktop techs. We are talking med-v, and app-v, and the like.

Just seems odd that the Cert Planner lists this as a two MCTS test cert.
